Graham is rural Pierce County with a fast-growing suburban stripe down the middle. Along Meridian (SR-161) and 224th Street, subdivisions from the 2000s through the 2020s brought PEX supply, tankless and high-efficiency water heaters, and pressure-reducing valves that are now reaching their first round of failures. Step a half mile off the highway, though, and you're on acreage: 1970s–'90s homes and manufactured homes on private wells and septic systems, where the plumber has to understand pumps, pressure tanks, and treatment as well as pipe.
Well water is the defining fact of Graham plumbing. There is no municipal water utility for most of the area — Firgrove Mutual and a handful of small community systems serve the north end, and everyone else has a well. Groundwater here runs hard and often carries iron, which stains fixtures, scales tankless units, and cuts years off a tank water heater's life. Sewer is mostly septic, with Pierce County sewer limited to the newer developments.
